History: Was born in VA. shortly after the arrival of the Johantgen family to the U.S. and before they went westward to Ohio to settle.
He is listed as a 23 year old blacksmith in the 1860 Census of Santa Clara County, California . In 1880, he is in Dayton, Montgomery Co, listed as a boarder , age 43, and occupation as "blacksmith". He apparently went back to California and married around 1895 to Catherine ****. She was probably a widow with 3 children according to the census. In 1900 they were living in Oak Park, CA. (Obituary Sacramento Bee, 08 Feb 1905). Francis is listed in his father's will and received a quarter of the estate in 1875
Obituary JOHENTGEN - In Oak Park, February 8, 1905, Francis Johentgen,
husband of Cathrine Johentgen, a native of West Virginia, aged 67 years, 3
months and 6 days. (--> ~ 02.11.1838). Friends are respectfully invited to
attend the funeral Thursday at 1:30 p.m. from his late residence, 2013
Orange Avenue, Oak Park, thence to German Lutheran Church, Twelfth and K
Streets, where services will be held commencing at 2:30 o'clock, Interment
City Cemetery.
